Mr Boddington’s Studio rules!

I have always loved the silence and refinement of silhouettes and how they capture that old world charm. Put together with punchy, preppy colors and clever text – this line is is a gem…or as they would say “coture correspondence”.

My friend Liz came in recently to get her wedding invitations done at Urbanic. She has a great eye for design so I knew she would come up with something unique. When she announced “robin’s egg blue and deep red” I was excited because I knew I was in for a treat.

I love it! It is such a refreshing and alternative color combo. It is cool, fun, contrasty and not at all to be confused with patriotism. ( NOT that that is a bad thing )

So I tuned in to the world around me (Etsy) and discovered the many possibilites of this color duet.

So far, other than being hot, I don’t feel like I have really been experiencing the joys of summer (yet). Today however, I got a little bit of a jump start – as it arrived for me in a box !

These letterpressed journals, note sets and place cards by Carrot & Stick Press brought in the happiness of beach umbrellas, patio parties and croquet picnics.

How handy are these adorable birthday calendars and table number sets?

Now, I am off to find an infinity pool to swim in……

Yesterday was the very first Cupcake Saturday at Urbanic!

The fact that we now offer cupcakes on Abbot Kinney Blvd, makes me feel complete. Here is the scoop… they are made by TasteLove BakeHouse, (which is a new little husband/wife run gourmet baking company that just popped up). The cupcakes are full of organic ingredients and bursting with tastiness.. sooooooo goood!

Such a perfect addition to the store. The gift boxes are adorable !

The flavors of the day were:
Vanilla Cloud- ( vanilla cake made with madagasar burbon vanilla bean )
Snow Cap – (chocolate cake with vanilla bean buttercream and a hint of sea salt)
Coconut Island -(ube purple yam coconut cake with vanilla )
Heart of Gold- (chocolate cake filled with organic peanut butter & topped with crushed salted peanuts)
Saint Chocolate -(chocolate cake with chocolate buttercream & milk chocolate sprinkles from France
Next week, and every Saturday we will have a new batch of flavors to choose from. These can be pre-ordered for pick up or purchased at the store in singles, half dozens, or dozens.

Due to the popularity of the minis we were giving out on Saturday, we will also be offering mini sets as well.

seriously, could this be any more cheerful?

The party was SO fun ! We knew it would be good, but had no idea we would have such a huge turn out. I was amazed at the response we had to the shrinky dink “project social” and speechless at what artistic talent I saw go through our toaster oven. I baked up over 150 creations (and was seriously slaving over the little hot oven). People maked and baked lockets, fish, owls, turntables, pigs, squid and so many other unique and tiny artworks.

I wish I had more examples of the final masterpieces, but people were snatching them up right out of the oven and stringing them around their necks.

The excitement of watching them shrink was huge. There were a few little overcooked casualties but in the end it was all good.

Michelle, our Venice neighbor, baked up these awesome cupcakes and actually made the Neighborhood bird on top with icing. Cristin, the incredible, made these little party hats for Neighborhood’s first birthday. Venice Beach Wine poured the very best for this event and I tasted some wines from Northern California vineyards that were completely new discoveries for me!

If you are one of the many that showed up, thanks for making this such a great night. Thanks also to Meg for potting all of those nice plants for us and to Paul at TastyPie Photography for taking these great shots. Special thanks to Megan at Beach Bungalow8 for showing me how to make picture mosaics, and finally, thank you to the cops for eventually shutting us down …(so our neighbors will still like us).

The day started off perfectly. We got in our first box of Enormous Champion in and it was even better than I had remembered it!

Patio Culture dropped off a stunning vintage outdoor lounge set for the party.

Our babysitter Mirian, surprised us and made a few gallons of this AMAZING mint lemonade water. I am officially addicted to this drink from this point forward. – Also !! Joshua painted my cupcake stand white – (which I have been wanting him to do for so long!) It felt so good to see it look the way I had envisioned it finally.

AND- the cherry on top of the cake is as follows… A few days ago I was at Target checking out the Cynthia Rowley summer collection I found these stylish little tumblers that I decided I could not live without this summer. As always, our target was sold of what I wanted and I knew I wouldn’t have time to scout them out other locations in the greater Los Angeles area. Apparently my mother-in-law got word of my dilemma, and brought me a bag of these from her well stocked Orange County store. Thanks Lisa !!

The party by the way was unbelievable x 8000. I will be posting the details as soon as i get our photos together.

This morning I woke up and found out that the Paper+Cup blog did a cute write up on our store.

A few weeks ago we were posted on Apartment Therapy Los Angeles for tips on staying organized!

And a few weeks before that, The Scoop wrote a lovely post about us when we launched our new website.

Feeling honored to say the least, Joshua and I just wanted to say thanks to Minhee, Laure, and Emily for the kind words.

I always loved making shrinky dinks when I was little. I loved the idea of baking something that wasn’t food, watching it curl and then turn small. It is a strange and entertaining experience. Although I am not big on “sun catchers” anymore, It is refreshing to know that you can still create your own tiny wonder these days. I am baffled by how many people do not remember what they are. Thanks to Nicole at Making it Lovely, I have a photo demonstration of exactly how you make a shrinky dink.

1. Get your special shrinky dink paper from urbanic and decide what you are making. Then draw or print out at about 50% larger than you imagine it to be. Color it in with markers and cut out.

2. Place in oven on a baking pan and cook for like 3 or 4 minutes. Make sure you watch it. ( this is fun)

3. After the excitement of watching it curl up and shrink down, take it out of the oven and admire your new little gem once it cools.

4. love it and put to use.
So the reason I am writing about shrinky dinks today is because this friday (june 6th) we are hosting a first-friday back yard- lounge party with Neighborhood. We are going to put on a “project social” with special ink jet compatible shrinky dink paper that we have at urbanic. Patio culture is going to style it up with their outdoor furnishings and fun pillows, TrickTurner from Juxtaphone is going to spin down-tempo outdoor beats and Venice Beach Wines is offering tastings of rare California wines. This is such a fun way to kick off the summer! If you are reading this and you live close, come and join us and DO make your own shrinky dink.. ! If you live far, stay tuned- I will be posting an event recap next week.
